The British Medical Association (BMA) wants fighting such as cage fighting or extreme mixed martial arts fighting made illegal. This type of fighting essentially involves fighting where absolutely anything is allowed, often resulting in extreme injuries or even death.

The BMA have no interest in banning martial arts such as Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, just the brutal and ultra-violent ones, branded under the umbrella term ‘extreme martial arts’. This extreme fighting has been likened to a human version of dog-fighting or cock-fighting, and is not even considered a sport. Despite this, there is a definite market for this, with TV channels dedicated to it on a Pay-per-view basis.

However, the British National Martial Arts Association is defending the accusations, and explains that the concept is being blown out of proportion. It’s claimed to be safer than many other popular sports such as Formula 1 or Rugby.

I don’t really have an opinion on either side for this matter, but I do think that there is a movement in society that wants to wrap us all up in a protective bubble so that nothing bad can happen to us. If you think of calls to ban smacking childen and the ban on smoking, they are designed to protect the general public. But just think, if we have too many of these controls, where will the controls stop? And what will we be allowed to do?
