Awards for Eastenders

I do enjoy watching a few soaps, and Eastenders is one of my favourites. The Inside Soap awards gave 7 awards to Eastenders, including best actress to Lacey Turner who plays Stacey and storyline of the year for the death of Danielle. The storylines this year have certainly been interesting, and in true soap fashion snatch happiness away at every turn. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens later on this year.

UK ranks 5th in Eurovision

I do enjoy Eurovision, and this year was no exception. Held in Moscow, it was a huge event and they had obviously invested a lot of time and money into ensuring it was a success. I was especially pleased that our UK entry did better than the last few years, coming a very respectable 5th place. Hopefully we can continue this over the next few years too. The winning song this time round was from Norway, so I look forward to watching next year’s competition from Norway.

Red Dwarf back

One of my favourite TV shows, Red Dwarf, is returning to TV for an Easter special. Red Dwarf initially ran for 8 series between 1988 and 1999, it’s had a long break and is being eagerly anticipated.

The show follows Lister, the last human, as he attempts to return to earth. He is joined by various crew members – a mutated humanoid cat, a hologram and a robotic servant. Their humorous antics easily filled the current series and I’m really looking forward to seeing them back in this special mini series, 21 years after the first show aired.

Vampires now Cool & Trendy

There has been a shift in attitude towards a number of things, especially noticable when you look at attitudes towards ‘fringe’ society. Vampires are one part of this, now generally portrayed as misunderstood outsiders rather than objects of horror.

Twilight is the latest film showing this shifted attitude to Vampires. Once again with a ‘vegetarian’ vampire who refrains from drinking human blood. I think it’s strange how general opinion shifts, the dangerous outsider and fringe society has a certain appeal that is often glamourised in films and the traditional ‘bad’ guys often have a softer side revealed too.

Most played at Christmas

I love the old classic Christmas Songs, and it appears I’m not alone as the top 10 most played at Christmas list was compiled recently.

I had to agree with a lot of the top 10, I think Wham – Last Christmas is my favourite Christmas song, and Band Aid – Do They Know it’s Christmas is right up there too as was Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas is You. The only one i wasn’t so sure on was no 10, Bing Crosby – White Christmas.

John marches out of Strictly

I’m still not quite sure what to make of the shock announcement last week that John Seargent was leaving the Strictly Come Dancing competition. He had his last dance with Kristina on Saturday, a lovely waltz.

I love Strictly, and think it would have spoiled the competition if John had stayed much longer. However, I wouldn’t like to think he had been pushed out either, that would also spoil the competition. All the details I’ve seen about it though seem to confirm that John left of his own free will, to keep the competition interesting. I can understand his point, there are only so many weeks you can cope with seeing much better dancers having to leave while you stay on.

Strictly Divided

I love Strictly Come Dancing, and even when I’m not in on Sat night I make sure it’s recorded so I don’t miss out. This year has seen a huge controversy over John Sergeant. Every week the judges rate him lowest, and every week he is voted back in by the public.

I can see both sides of this debate. While I love seeing the underdog win out, I also don’t like seeing other people lose out. We’re getting to the point of the competition now where everyone is improving and could be really good. With John each week staying in, someone who actually can dance is being pushed out. I guess that is the nature of the competition, but I think it’ll be a shame if we don’t get to see the limits of what some of the real improvers could produce.
