What to do for the summer

summer holiday

The summer holidays are generally looked forward to by children, but can be a source of worry for parents. Keeping children occupied for the 6 week period can be a problem, especially if money is a concern. Just finding a childminder can be a problem, before you even think about amusements. With the current concerns about obesity added in, finding active pursuits for them is also advisable. Spending the entire summer playing computer games is not a sensible option.

Ask in the right ear

right ear

We all like being heard and getting our own way. New research suggests that speaking into someone’s right ear is the best way to get results. Apparently this is because the left brain is better at processing requests and deals with information from the right ear. They tried a variety of experiments and concluded that asking into the right ear sent the request to a more amenable part of the brain. I’ll certainly keep this in mind next time I’m asking for something!

Bike Week

The UK National Bike Week starts on Saturday and is a great promotion for bike riding. There are a whole range of events all over the UK, from basic cycle skills to advanced rides and even film evenings. Many companies also add their own Bike2Work event during the week, offering a variety of incentives to employees cycling to work. Keep an eye out for events near you and spread the word that cycling is fun, keeps you fit and is good for the environment. There’s no excuse really so get on your bike!

Time to eat curry

I do enjoy a good curry, and I know I’m not alone on that! Now new research suggests that eating curry regularly could help prevent dementia. One of the components of tumeric seems to be the key, dissolving the build up of plaques and nerve fibres that cause the degradation of brain tissue. More research is needed to prove the results but I think it’s better safe than sorry, so time to get down the curry house!

Think before you leap

Haizhu bridge

Sometimes attempting suicide can be a cry for help, without actually meaning to go through with it. If so you need to be careful in China. A man attempting suicide was pushed off the bridge by an angry passer-by who had been held up for 5 hours. While it was a rather extreme reaction I can see his point, it is rather selfish to cause that much trouble for so many people.

Man’s best friend

A dog is often referred to as man’s best friend, and for one man his dog really was! Despite being in her final few weeks of life due to terminal cancer the bulldog woke up her owner with enough time for them both to escape a fire in the house. I think this story really shows karma, by deciding to give his dog her last few weeks in peace she was around to save his life.

household drill

Most operations take place in sterile surroundings with clinical tools. However, sometimes circumstances don’t allow the ideal operation settings. This was the case for an Australian doctor who successfully used a household drill to save a young boy’s life. (more…)

Eurovision 2009

I do enjoy Eurovision, and this year was no exception. Held in Moscow, it was a huge event and they had obviously invested a lot of time and money into ensuring it was a success. I was especially pleased that our UK entry did better than the last few years, coming a very respectable 5th place. Hopefully we can continue this over the next few years too. The winning song this time round was from Norway, so I look forward to watching next year’s competition from Norway.

brain willpower

Everyone knows you need self control and willpower to accomplish many things, such as living a healthy life style or giving up smoking or drinking. New research has found a small spot in the brain that seems to govern willpower. They examined a number of subjects and examined their brains while they rated foods based on taste and healthiness. This showed activity in a particular area when choosing a healthy option.
