Smoking Age Review

On 1st October 2007, the legal age for buying tobacco in England, Scotland and Wales has been increased from 16 to 18. The idea is to try and reduce the number of young smokers and make it easier for retailers to identify under-age smokers. Currently, about 9% of 11 to 15-year-olds smoke, and the government hopes that the change move will reduce this number.

It’s shocking how many youngsters do smoke. I’m not that old myself, but I managed to resist the desire to smoke (I hate the smell, so not that hard really). Why its considered ‘cool’ to smoke, I have absolutely no idea. There are youngsters who refuse to give up even with the age increase. They know the health issues but won’t give up. Some just say “I can’t”, which is a feeble excuse.

Something that smokers don’t consider (in addition to the health issues), is that it artificially ages the skin. I’ve seen people look 10 years older due to smoking for only 5 years! And this one is aimed at youngsters… smokers are most definitely uglier, and you are massively decreasing your chances of finding a partner in the future due to your bad habit!
