Stem cells used in transplant

Ground breaking techniques have been used in a windpipe transplant operation. New techniques were used to wash most of the cells away from a donor windpipe, leaving a shell behind. Then stem shells from the patient were used to regrow the windpipe on the structure, making it appear to be the patients own tissue and removing the need for anti-rejection drugs.

I thought this was a brilliant breakthrough, the patient is doing well 5 months on from the operation. I expect this will become the norm for many transplant operations in the future, making it much more likely they’ll be a success. This was the first human trial of the technique, and as it has been such a success I look forward to hearing more success stories in the future.
